Northampton Museum shoe exhibition
Introduction graphic
Featured project
The exhibition examines the craftsmanship, innovation and global influence of Northamptonshire’s shoe industry, from the traditional craft to modern manufacturing. Our brief was to transform this industrial story into an accessible environment, presenting shoemaking as a powerful reflection of local identity, economic history and pride.

‘Shaped by Shoes – The Northamptonshire Shoe Industry’ explores the region’s famous footwear heritage, revealing how generations of artisans, innovators and businesses shaped both local communities and global fashion. Through historic artefacts, machinery, tools and archival material, the exhibition celebrates the craftsmanship and industrial legacy in the heart of Northamptonshire.
An aerial view of the proposed layout, showing how the exhibition’s zones, displays and interactives are arranged to create a clear, engaging visitor journey through the exhibition.

Each of the 182 objects reflected the expertise of the people behind the industry. Our role was to bring the shoemaking process to life through impactful graphics and interactive features that appeal to a wide audience.
Layered fabric banners featuring archival photography create depth and atmosphere, while factory-inspired wall finishes and colour zoning define the gallery spaces. Large maps, machinery and original artefacts combine to place the footwear industry within its social and industrial context.

Translucent fabric banners featuring a historic photograph of King George VI visiting a Northampton factory illustrating a moment of national recognition and reinforcing the significance of Northampton’s footwear industry.

The exhibition encourages visitor participation through a series of playful games. A historically inspired “Make Your Own Factory Rules” magnetic wall interactive lets visitors create their own workplace guidelines, while a “Design Your Own Shoes” board invites experimentation with shoe design and embellishments. A clocking-in machine adds an immersive touch, giving insight into factory life.

Alongside the history of production and innovation, the exhibition highlights the human stories of factory life, training and tradition. By connecting past skills with contemporary design and manufacture, visitors experience the lasting influence of Northamptonshire’s shoemaking heritage and its continued relevance today.
